When Dressing Up Isn’t Fun for Every Child

SHARE

Halloween costumes can be exciting for some children and uncomfortable for others. A few small changes can make dressing up much easier.

Halloween usually comes with costumes, face paint and plenty of excitement. But for some children, dressing up can feel much less enjoyable than adults expect.

An outfit may look great but feel scratchy. A mask might be uncomfortable. Face paint may feel strange on the skin.

And a child who seemed enthusiastic when choosing a costume can suddenly refuse to wear it when the day arrives.

Clothes Can Feel Very Different

Some children are particularly sensitive to fabric textures, labels, seams or unfamiliar clothing. For those children, discomfort isn’t necessarily fussiness.

They may simply be experiencing the clothing much more intensely.

Make the Costume Work for the Child

Trying an outfit before the event gives children time to decide how it feels. Removing scratchy labels, washing new clothes beforehand or choosing softer fabrics can also help. There’s no rule saying Halloween requires a full costume.

A favourite T-shirt with a Halloween accessory can work perfectly well.

Give Them Some Control

Children are often more comfortable when they have choices.

That might mean choosing between two outfits, deciding whether they want face paint or opting out of part of an activity.

Halloween should be enjoyable, not something a child feels they have to tolerate.

Fun Doesn’t Have to Look the Same for Everyone

One child may want the biggest costume in the room. Another may prefer a pumpkin badge and nothing more. Both are joining in.

The aim is simply to make the experience enjoyable enough that they remember the fun rather than the discomfort.
