A Gentler Way to Reset School Sleep Routines

SHARE

The first school morning does not have to begin with tired children and rushed parents. A few small changes now could make September feel much easier.

Late dinners, family outings and relaxed bedtimes are part of what makes the summer holidays enjoyable.

Children may stay awake later because there is no early school alarm the following morning. When family schedules allow, they might also sleep for longer.

The difficulty often appears when the new term suddenly feels very close.

Moving directly from a relaxed holiday routine to an early school morning can leave everyone tired and frustrated. A gradual adjustment is usually easier for children and parents.

Start Before the Final Night

There is no need to remove all summer flexibility at the beginning of August.

Instead, consider beginning the reset during the final week or two before school. Moving bedtime slightly earlier every few days can feel far more realistic than asking a child to go to sleep an hour earlier without preparation.

Wake-up time can move gradually too, helping the whole day shift towards the timetable children will need once school resumes.

The aim is not to create a perfect routine immediately. It is simply to reduce the difference between the holiday and school-day schedules before the first morning arrives.

Bring Back a Predictable Wind-Down

A familiar routine helps children recognise that the active part of the day is ending.

The NHS recommends a calm and predictable bedtime routine at a consistent time. For a school-age child, this might begin with preparing for the following morning before washing and brushing their teeth.

The final part of the evening could include reading together or having a quiet conversation. Softer lighting can also create a calmer atmosphere.

The routine does not need to be long or complicated. What matters is that it feels familiar enough to repeat.

Look at the Whole Evening

Bedtime difficulties do not always begin when a child gets into bed.

An energetic game or disagreement immediately beforehand can make it harder to settle. As the new term approaches, try to make the final part of the evening noticeably calmer than the rest of the day.

Screens can be difficult to switch off when children have enjoyed more freedom during the holidays. Reducing evening screen time gradually may be easier than removing it without warning on the final night.

Reading, drawing or listening to something calming can help a child slow down without making the evening feel restrictive.

NHS guidance for school-age children also recommends maintaining a regular routine and avoiding stimulating television or computer games while a child is trying to fall asleep.

Restore the Morning Routine Too

A sleep reset is not only about bedtime.

Waking at a more consistent time helps the whole day move closer to a school schedule. Getting dressed and eating breakfast earlier can also make the first week feel less unfamiliar.

A planned morning activity can provide a practical reason to get up. This might be a walk, a trip to the park or an earlier camp arrival.

It is also an opportunity for parents to notice anything that could cause delays once term begins. Uniforms may need attention, shoes may no longer fit or the family may simply need more time than expected to get ready.

Expect Some Resistance

Children may not be enthusiastic about giving up their later summer nights.

Acknowledge that the change can feel disappointing while remaining consistent. It may help to explain that the routine is being adjusted because school mornings are approaching, not because all the summer fun has ended.

There will still be time for enjoyable days and family activities. The new routine is simply helping their body prepare for what comes next.

A gradual reset will not make every September morning perfect. It can, however, reduce the shock of the first early start and help the whole family approach the new term with more energy.
