What are children really gaining from their summer experiences beyond simply having fun?

Hi everyone,

August always seems to arrive more quickly than expected. One moment, families are preparing for the end of term, and the next, the summer holidays are already well under way.

Over the past few weeks, we have welcomed children into camp with all kinds of emotions. Some arrive full of excitement and ready to join the first activity. Others prefer to watch quietly for a while before finding their place.

As the morning unfolds, the surroundings become more familiar. A coach remembers their name, another child invites them into a game, or they find someone to sit with at lunchtime. These may appear to be ordinary moments, but they are often what helps a child feel that they belong.

More Than Keeping Children Busy

Parents naturally need dependable childcare during the long school holidays, but a positive camp experience should offer more than a full timetable.

Time away from the usual classroom gives children the opportunity to meet new people and discover activities they may never have considered trying. They begin making small decisions for themselves and become more comfortable in unfamiliar situations.

One child may discover an unexpected interest in a sport. Another might complete a challenge alongside someone they have only just met. For some, the achievement is simply finding the courage to take part after watching from the side.

These steps may look small to an adult, but they can feel significant to the child experiencing them.

Confidence Grows Quietly

Confidence is not always loud. It does not necessarily mean being the first to volunteer or the strongest player in a match.

Sometimes it appears when a child asks a coach for help rather than giving up. It may be seen when they encourage someone else or decide to try again after finding an activity difficult.

Our role is to create an environment where children feel secure enough to take these steps without pressure.

At Rising Stars, children are encouraged to participate at their own pace. We do not expect everyone to enjoy the same activity. What matters is giving each child the chance to find something that helps them feel capable and included.

The Summer Is Still Full of Possibilities

We are delighted that so many families have already joined us, and there is still plenty to come.

Following strong demand, we have added another camp week at Lee Valley VeloPark from 17th to 21st August. Our summer programme also continues across Archer Academy, Parliament Hill School and Finchley Cricket Club.

Each venue offers something different, from sport and creative workshops to STEM sessions and specialist activities. Although the programmes vary, the atmosphere should always feel welcoming and supportive.

Thank You

I would like to thank every parent who has trusted us with their child this summer.

I would also like to recognise our coaches, venue managers and office team. A successful camp day may look effortless from the outside, but it relies on a great deal of preparation and care behind the scenes.

There is still plenty of summer ahead. I hope the coming weeks give your children time to enjoy themselves, form new friendships and return home with stories they are excited to share.
